Let’s say so long to Summer with some cyanotype printing!
What’s a cyanotype?
A cyanotype is an old, camera-less photographic printing process that uses UV light to create a rich, monochrome Prussian-blue print. Invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, the method involves coating paper or fabric with iron salts, placing objects or negatives on top, exposing it to sunlight, and rinsing it in water.
We will start in our darkened studio where we will apply our freshly made light-sensitive cyanotype liquid to a variety of papers, as well as a white cotton zippered pouch.
While those dry, we’ll start organizing the objects we will be placing on our backgrounds as well as creating some different resists using acetate and paper.
Once our arrangements are complete, we will bring them outside to bathe in the sun. After a rinse, the beautiful blue will be revealed!
Attendees are invited to bring any items they may want to include on their prints! Remember that the sunlight will leave behind the shape of anything in its path, so items with fine details that will silhouette well work best. Ideas we love are film negatives, lace, doilies, items from nature (feathers, shells, leaves, flowers) and found objects such as bottle caps, small glass bottles or vials (flat/square edged is best), keys or jewelry.
Attendees are also welcome to bring items from home that they would like to print on such as a t-shirt or tote bag. White or light colored natural fibers work best for this process. Avoid non-porous and artificial materials such as acrylic or nylon.
Ages 10+ welcome - we kindly ask that kiddos under 13 are accompanied by a ticketed adult for this class.

IMPORTANT INFO: As this project is dependent on sunshine, we will need to reschedule in the event of rain. Rain date will be one week after the scheduled workshop and at the same time - in this case, 9/27 @ 12-2pm. Please try to be available for the rain date just in case. If you are unable to attend the rescheduled session, you are welcome to put your ticket toward another Studio Moon workshop within the following 30 days. (Equal or lesser value - or may be put toward a class of a higher value with the remaining balance due at booking.)
